In April 2019, the Virginia General Assembly passed a proposal from Governor Ralph Northam to fund significant upgrades to Interstate 81—abandoning prior efforts to toll the roadway. The new funding plan dedicates new fees and taxes to go directly to fixing the ailing interstate.

This is a tremendous victory for Virginia families and businesses and it couldn’t have been done without your help. Tolling would have been the worst possible option for funding I-81, and the voice of Virginia drivers was heard in the General Assembly. Only by working together and saying NO to tolls were we able to find this new, more sustainable solution to Interstate 81.

While Virginia’s effort to toll existing interstates is on hold for now, we encourage all supporters to visit the Alliance for Toll-Free Interstates and sign our petition to stay engaged. New tolling efforts are slowly emerging at the federal level, and we will need the same united support to beat the tolling lobby in the Nation’s Capital.
